Virtual interviews used to exist as a pre-screening to allow the company to decide who to bring in for in-person interviews, but today this is not always the case. Virtual, or remote, interviews are slowly replacing traditional interviews as technology becomes better and the world changes.
Here is your top list of Dos and DON’T’s for your next virtual interview.
DO prepare a space for your interview. Make sure it’s quiet, clean and comfortable with a crisp & interesting background. Position your camera in a flattering way.
DO check that you have the date, time, name of interviewer, and connection link correct. Be aware of time zone differences!
DO test your technology in advance, making sure you have a strong Internet connection, that all teleconferencing software is downloaded, and that your microphone and camera are operating as expected.
DO have your printed resume and the job posting in hand, as well as a water bottle and box of tissues placed out of sight of the camera.
DO practice, practice, practice! Just as you would for an in-person interview.
DO dress nicely from head-to-toe. Always expect the unexpected – you may need to stand up during the interview.
DO check your laptop battery and turn off all phone and computer notifications.
DO smile! Be mindful of nervous habits and fidgeting.

DON’T chose a cutesy or unprofessional screen name.
DON’T wear bold patterns, or all white or black. Choose a solid jewel tone or pastel top.
DON’T be too quick to answer, but do be mindful of the delay in communication as to not cut off your interviewer’s questions.
DON’T allow distracting noise or background movement. All children, televisions, and pets should be kept out of the room.
DON’T treat the virtual interview more casually than an in-person interview. Bring your best foot forward, do your research, practice your responses, follow-up with a thank you letter, and pursue the opportunity until completion.
